Dr Shirin Shafaie
Post-Doctoral Research Scholar, CMCS
In this seminar, Dr Shirin Shafaie discusses various Muslim and Christian initiatives for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. She argues that faith-based approaches can complement, enrich, and reinforce the foundations of international humanitarian law and enhance their adequacy vis-à-vis the full scale and different aspects of the contemporary nuclear danger.
She discusses how some faith leaders, Muslim and Christian scholars and heads of states, have attempted to shift the state-centric paradigm that currently frames and dominates the debate over the contemporary nuclear danger to a new paradigm concerned with the preeminent and inherent value of human dignity, the idea of ‘just peace’, and the centrality of the human person.
